Experiencing The Depths Of Jesus Christ Nelson's Royal Classics
Published in Hardcover by Nelsonword Publishing Group (15 November, 2000)
Author: Madame Guyon
Average review score:

Excellent book on the Christian life,
It is the most awsome book I've ever read, besides the bible. It will give you knowledge of the Christ that lives within us as Christians, it is very exciting, but very deep. It is profound!

The Most Important Book Ever Written
This is with out a doubt the most important piece of literature ever written. It should be required reading for every Christian. Mde. Guyon deals with subjects such as abondonment, suffering, dry times. if you will consider her insights on these and other topics this book will bring you higher heights and deeper depths. You must read this book.

Return to Inner abode
I read and reread this book. For those who follow Fr.Keating's books on seeking God within, this is an excellent companion. They seemed to be saying the same things! That God lives in your heart and through comtemplation He will draw you to himself. Guyon does not come out with a specific prayer methodology like Keating but she speaks the same things, prayer of silence, letting go of the false self, abandonment to God. Strange chpt 2 is kind of asterixed, I considered it extremely foundational.

This is a classic and I say get Keatings books as you get this and you have a solid intro to the Christian spiritual journey.

Ps: this is not journey of bliss and Guyon tells about the travail you will go through until you reach the inner abode where God resides and where your true self can be found...

The Mitford Years Box Set, Volumes 1-3: At Home in Mitford, A Light in the Window, and These High, Green Hills
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (November, 1997)
Authors: Jan Karon and Donna Kae Nelson

The "Mitford" series is wonderful reading!!
Jan Karon has done an incredible job of depicting the life of a fictional small town preacher. While the setting is in the south, Mitford could be small town anywhere, U.S.A. The characters are so real I thought I was reading about people from the small town I grew up in. These books made me laugh and cry, sometimes both at the same time! I often pass my paperbacks on to others to read when I am finished. These books will not leave my home. I truly hope that Jan Karon will write more!

The First Three Books of The Mitford Series by Jan Karon
Not to long ago, I finished reading all of the Joshua series by Fr. Grizone and thought to myself, "there's got to be more good Christian reading". A friend mentioned the Mitford series. Well, needless to say, I stayed up many a night til midnight reading the wonderful adventures of Mitford! I have told many a friend about this series. I bought a copy of the first book for my twin sister for our birthday the other day... Jan, you are a breath of fresh air in this polluted world we live in. Thanks for giving us hope that towns can take care of its own people, hmmm maybe even a whole country? Let's hope so! God Bless you for giving us the gift of Mitford. Also thank you from all the ministers in this world who can laugh with Fr. Tim. He and Cynthia are great gems. I too am single and looking for the right "Cynthia". Everyone else, if you haven't read the Mitford... Why not? Run don't walk to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy!

Totally absorbing -- and uplifting!
What can I say about the four books in the Mitford series by Jan Karon? They are the greatest fiction I have read in ages. I read one, then another, then the third and fourth, and then went back and read all four a second time. Now for a busy person like me -- that really says something. I was totally absorbed, enthralled, uplifted, taken away gently to a gentler place and time where my most cherished values were brought to life in real people. Mitford was on my reading table for about a year! I hesitate to call this "Christian fiction" because it is not "religious" or "preachy" -- yet it illustrated great Judao-Christian values in slices of real life among a bevy of character any of whom could be a book in him/herself. Just imagine a schitzophrenic lady who directs traffic at the town square in her father's Civil War uniform... who has a husband who loves her with a warm humor and humility -- that's characterization at its best in American literature! Imagine a 60-year-old Episcopalean priest who has never married -- who falls in love! These books have characters, drama, pathos, humor, romance, everything! Buy and read 'em all!

The Mitford Years
My friend told me of these books after a book signing that occured in town and now; I am sorry to have missed meeting Jan Karon! I have read all 5 books in less than a couple of months! I absolutely loved each and every one of them. Everyday I would transport myself to the town of Mitford and the interesting people in it. It was so wonderful to read something pleasurable and wholesome. I found them quite humerous at times. Father Tim is such a wonderful example of a good friend and just a giving person. Cynthia becomes a strong aspect of his life, revealing another side of him. Her love for life just grabs you! Dooley transforms into a wonderful new person because of all the unconditional love and support that Father Tim and all the people in Mitford give him. It broke my heart to finish the last book, yet I am glad to have "known" the people of Mitford. I so impatiently wait for Jan Karon's next masterpiece and that is what led me to her children's books "Miss Fannie's Hat" and "Jeremy." I have read these with my children time and time again. We look forward to more Jan Karon books!

We all aspire to Mitford...
I was encouraged to read these books by a few people. Normally a British police procedural mystery reader, I found myself to be hooked with the first book. I very much enjoyed the characterization employed by Jan Karon as I had clear pictures in my mind of all the people and animals. Also, the town of Mitford is charming and I think it exists in each of our 50 states. While we all might aspire to be citizens of Mitford, certainly many events occurred which probably wouldn't in the "real" realm of things. But I very much enjoyed Father Tim's unfettered faith in God; something I am exploring myself these days. I am not Episcopalian nor do I know much about it but Karon provided enough information for me to understand the basics and kind of wish maybe I was one. The town residents ranging from Miss Sadie to Louella to Coot to Percy to Esther, etc were all clearly presented and there was a great deal of humor involved with their antics. There was also alot of emotion involved in this series...but not all cries are bad ones, some of them are refreshing. Pick up the first book in the series, you will be hooked.

Wonderful Books
I have read the first 4 books of the Mitford series. I am in the middle of the 5th. They are very fun and easy to read. You get caught up in the every day lives of the Mitford residents. I really enjoyed reading how Father Tim's life changed from the minute Barabus "adopted" him. I have laughed out loud and cried while reading. I feel as if I know all the chacters in the books personally. I think all us would like to live a small town such as this one, where people watch out for each other and really care for one another. I would recommend these books to anyone.

Miss Nelson Is Missing
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Harry Allard and James Marshall
Average review score:

Wonderfully silly tale engages children and more
The kids in sweet Miss Nelson's class are rude and obnoxious, until a mean substitute replaces her. By the time Miss Nelson returns, they have learned to show their appreciation by behaving well. A great moral, certainly, but hardly sugar-coated: the children's misbehavior and the substitute's grouchiness are outrageous and delightful. This book is one of the most engaging I've ever read to my kids(ages 4-7)and a great success with my ADD child who normally has a hard time sitting through a story. It provides a great platform for inferencing and theory of mind work.

Another Childhood Favorite! And It's Still Great Today!
As I mentioned in my review of "Stinky Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales," I am taking a Children's Lit class in college, which requires me to read a lot of children's books. So, this is a great excuse for me to write more reviews. If you want to make fun of me for liking these books, so be it. I could care less.

"Miss Nelson is Missing" was always a childhood favorite for me. One of my first picture books I ever read, I think. I even remember that my copy came with a record that you could listen along to as you read. Wow, does that bring back memories. I picked this up a few days ago, and found myself enjoying it as much as I did when I was little, if not more.

This is a book about a sweet and nice teacher who has one of the most terrible classes ever. Everyone is mean and nobody ever listens to her. Miss Nelson knows that something has to be done.

One day, when she doesn't arrive to class, the children are so happy. They think they have driven her away forever. They are all smiles and grins.....until....

They meet Miss. Viola Swamp, an ugly and mean teacher dressed in black and white makeup. She puts them to work, yells at them, and makes them do tons and TONS of homework. Desperate and worried, the children turn to a detective in order to solve the whereabouts of Miss Nelson.

This book is incredible. Fun for all ages, especially the young ones. It's fun and gives a good moral lesson at the same time. It has great writing and very cool pictures. The reading level is pretty easy. Nothing too mind-bending behind it.

I recommend "Miss Nelson is Missing!" to ANYONE! Yes, I don't care how old you are. You're never too old to enjoy a good children's book, and I'm starting to re-discover that. Check this one out whenever you can. And if you have kids, I can almost promise you that this will be a favorite.

Having a substitute teacher is not always a good thing
Remember when Joni Mitchell told us "You don't know what you've got 'till its gone"? Well, even if you have never heard about the "Big Yellow Taxi" you will realize that this is exactly what the kids in Room 207 learn when their teacher Miss Nelson goes missing. This was the worst behaved class in school and no matter what Miss Nelson tried the class would not settle down, made faces, giggled, squirmed and refused to do their homework. When Miss Nelson does not come to school the next day, the children are all excited because they think that now they can REALLY act up. But it is the children who are in for a rude awakening when they meet their new teacher, Miss Viola Swamp, a woman in an ugly black dress. After a few hours with Miss Swamp, the kids decide that they really miss their old teacher and wonder what could have happened to her?

No parent ever wants to hear that their kids do not like their teacher, but then what teacher wants students who are rude? "Miss Nelson Is Missing," written by Harry Allard and illustrated by James Marshall, teaches children several valuable lessons about appropriate decorum in the classroom without the children recognizing that they are actually learning something reading this book. This book makes having a happy classroom with a pleasant teacher sound like a very good thing indeed. Which, of course, it is! However, I think you will discover that teachers will like this book every more so that children. There are at least two other adventures of Miss Nelson and Room 207 that I know about, plus you can also read this classic children's book in Spanish in "La Senorita Nelson Ha Desaparecido!"

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide

GREAT RESOURCE!
The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide is the perfect resource for any MST3K fan! The book breaks down episodes in the seasons that do not air on the Sci-fi channel. I absolutely love this book, not just because I'm a fan of the show, but also because it gives you some interesting information about actors in the movies and behind-the-scenes antics of the MST3K cast.

It's a real shame that this wonderful show was cancelled, but the fans of this show have plenty of tapes, DVD's, and memorabilia to keep us happy!

If you're a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, buy this book! You won't be disappointed!

honestly my favorite book of all time
i'm a serious reader who reads actual novels and classic literature, but not even Joyce's "Ulysses" can top the genius of The MST3K Amazing Colossal Episode Guide.

i've read this book DOZENS of times, and reference it nearly daily. i would give my first born child for a new edition that covers EVERYTHING (season 7 wasn't aired yet when the book was written). if you are looking for updated episode capsules, consult mst3kinfo.com for season seven and mst3k.com (the scifi site) for the sci-fi channel episodes.

i can't say enough about this book. it should be twelve times longer because i can't get enough mst3k. it really inspired me to collect every episode and turned my from a casual fan in to a ridiculous fanatic. and i mean that in a good way.

even if you've never seen the show, this book will still make you laugh. kevin's vonnegut anecdote, mike's miles o'keefe tribute, "your area and you," and the hilarious "bunular funular" anatomy diagram photo from the convention are all highlights that require no knowledge of the show to appreciate.

i truly think anybody with an interest in modern humor should own a copy of this book

It's Huge!
OK, so this really only covers 6 seasons of the show, was written in 1995/96 and has nothing on the SciFi channel run. Still, for any fan of MST3K it is an indespensible guide to the show's history, and a hilarious tour of the best(worst) films ever lampooned on the show.

As said above, the book covers the first 6 seasons of the show, with brief section about the infamous KTMA Public Access years and a short rundown on the truncated season 7 on Comedy Central. Each movie is first given a very funny synopsis and then an analysis is made by one of the writers. Usually it's completely bizzare, especially if the analysis is by Mike Nelson, the show's head writer. The synopsis' also include great lines like "I want to hurt this movie" and "please, PLEASE don't reveal the super secret ending of Manos:The Hands of Fate". Each episode also has a breakdown of the "host segments", the skits that serve as bumpers for the movie, and every so often TV's Frank(writer Frank Conniff) pops up with his thoughts on a particular movie experience. The book also chronicles the various monsters that have appeared in the films over the years, from Godzilla to Torgo.

The history of the show is also included, from the birth of the idea to the conventio-con, expo-fest-a-rama held in 1995. It's all done tounge in cheek, but serves as a good guide to how the show went from public access obscurity to cult hit with it's own motion picture. If you ever loved this show, or simply want to decide who lives and who dies, you must own this book.

Handwriting Analysis : Putting It to Work for You
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 September, 1994)
Authors: Andrea McNichol and Jeffrey A. Nelson
Average review score:

INVALUABLE
Not only is Andrea McNichol's book on Handwriting Analysis the absolute best book on graphology that I've read thus far, but it was one of the MOST ENJOYABLE BOOKS I've ever read period! Maybe it's the "detective" in me, but anybody who loves a sleuth will thoroughly enjoy this book. It is colored with humor and the writer obviously has a gift for teaching. The book is very well written, and the content so interesting that I literally couldn't put it down. This is invaluable information. As someone who is working towards a PhD in Psychology, I was AMAZED at the significant contribution that graphology makes to the field, and even MORE amazed at how mental health professionals have gotten along without it! Worth it's weight in GOLD!

Best on the subject -- by far
I have an extensive libary of graphology books and can say this is by far the very best on the subject...for beginners or for seasoned handwriting analysts. I've read them all, even the new one of the "for complete idiots" variety and Andrea McNichol is the best hands down. If you want the best, most comprehensive and straightforward book on the subject, this is it. McNichol has many immitators, but they all fall short. She has set the high water mark in graphology books.

Best on the Subject
This is probably the very best book on handwriting analysis ever written. It has something for everyone -- from the highly skeptical beginner who knows nothing about graphology, to the most experienced graphologist. Andrea McNichol is one of the top, if not the top, people in the field of graphology, and reading her book will help you understand why. From cases about how Andrea helped police and authorities catch criminals via handwriting, to the use of graphology in job screening...Andrea covers it all like no other.

I have read dozens of graphology books, including all of the other leading experts. None of them comes close to the thoroughness and brilliance of Andrea's book. It's also extremely entertaining, funny, and I found myself sitting down to just read a little of it -- and ending up reading it over the course of two otherwise very busy days. If you're interested in learning about graphology, or have been doing it yourself for 20 years, this book is for you. It's a work of genius.

I found the 2e of "Principles of Biochemistry" by A. Lehninger, one of the most exciting books written in the field of Biochemistry. a book to use, and a book to keep
Lehninger's book remains the best single text in biochemistry, at least in English. A fine book for undergraduates, it is also the one volume that you may keep on your shelf for years to come, and the best biochem text for those whose primary specialty is not biochemistry (e.g. medicine, p-chem, microbio). No text is ever a substitute for the journals if you work in the field, but this book gives a sense of the whole discipline that is beneficial for anyone who may become too narrowly fixed on one topic. Its clear writing is also a blessing, both for those using English as a second language, and for native speakers with some affection for their own language

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book : Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf
Published in Hardcover by (May, 1992)
Authors: Harvey Penick, Bud Shrake, and Byron Nelson
Average review score:

It Never Gets Old
I've owned this book for a few years now, and like my caption says, it never gets old.

In this golfer's book you will find instruction, philosophy, and history - all woven masterfully together in the form of stories. Whether it's the lengthly section where Harvey gives his thoughts in the grip, or the extremely terse paragraph explaining why he never joined the tour, Penick uses the right words at the right times.

I've read it several times and often take it with me on long trips. It's broken into several very short segments, sometimes two or three on a page, sometimes two or three pages. This means you can always pick it up, read a quick snipit, and walk away from it.

Lastly, I've found that whenever my golf game is struggling, I read this book and it always somehow gets back on track. I don't know if it's from the lucid instruction or the comforting philosophy, but either way this book has become an integral part of my golf regimen.

Excellent book
Reading this book is like talking to a professional. The answers you need are right there. I read alot about golf as it has become my passion in the past year. This book is amazing. Harvey brings the game to life and makes it easy to understand. He explains so many aspects of the game that it is amazing it is a "Little Red Book" and not a Huge Red Book. Definately worth reading for any golf enthusiast.

This book is about the greatest golf teacher ever.
The book I had just read could be considered a novel but is more ani instructional-novel on one of the greatest golf teachers who ever lived. The man's name is Harvey Penick. The book he wrote is called;"Harvey Penickcs Little Red Book." The main theme of the story is mmainly to tell about the golfing and teaching life of Harvey Penick. Harvey Penick had a little red book where he would write down the notes on what is changing or progressing in a students golf game. Harvey would also write down his golf tips in his book. Harvey had a series of books. This bok is one of many books he wrote. Harvey Penick wrote another book called,"The Game For a Lifetime." That book he could not complete because he passed away before he could. Tom Kite one of his best friends took over and finished the book for him. He just used the knowledge he had gained from Mr. Penick. I couldn't tell you the whole story because alot of it is on the teaching of golf. What I can tell you are the little things such as, Harvey had a son named Tinsley, and a wife named Helen. Harvey was born in Austin,Texas.Harvey was the head pro at the Austin Country Club. He worked there until 1975 and held the job for fifty years. After that his son had taken over his position.Harvey, after he retired, decided to hang around the country club and teach whoever wanted to be taught about golf. I don't want to give away all the aspects about Harvey Penick. If you would like to know more on this amazing man you'll have to read his book for yourself. The book is only about 180 pages long. I would definitly say this is one of the best books I have ever read.Iliked because I got so much out of it. This book helped me a lot with my golf gaame and taught me about one of the greartest teachers ever. I would definitly recommend this book to others. The only thing is, if you don't play golf or have nothing to do with golf you might not enjoy it.

The Christian's Secret Of A Happy Life Nelson's Royal Classics
Published in Hardcover by Nelson Reference (15 August, 1999)
Authors: Hannah Whitehall Smith, Hannah Whitall Smith, and Fox
Average review score:

Peace of Mind is attainable with God!
A remarkable first hand book that gives you insight in how to actually surrender yourself to the Lord, and how to fully come to know Him and experience Him in your heart. Through this you will find true peace in your soul. God is using Hannah Whitall Smith to deliver an important message. A must read for any Christian wanting to grow in their love relationship with Christ.

Simply the best!
This book has been blessing people for 130 years - there is a reason for that. The reason this book is so great is that it focuses upon the only 2 essential practices for Christian growth and strength: Surrender and Faith. Everything in the book teaches us how to maintain absolute surrender to and total trust in God, how to overcome difficulties so that faith and trust remain steadfast, all mingled with many words of encouragement telling of the peace and joy such a life produces.

The one negative review in this list claims the book is terrible because we should seek holiness, not happiness. Clearly 100% surrender to God's will and 100% faith in God are holiness defined - and that expresses the entire thrust of the book. It is very unlikely that reviewer even read the book beyond the title - ignore them. Jesus wants our joy to be full, He tells us steps to take "so that your joy may be full"....but we better not tell this lone reviewer that Jesus recommends we seek joy - they might give HIM a bad review!

Do what this book says to do and find God waiting there to bless you abundantly with Christ-likeness.....with the natural result being great happiness! I agree with what one review said, if I had to choose only 2 books, they would be the Bible and The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life.

The Christians Secret to a Happy Life is a Christian Classic
I read it 22 years ago in my first Sunday School class after becoming a Christian. Now, I am using it to teach an adult Sunday School Class. My son, a Bible student at Criswell in Dallas has also found it to be extremely accurate doctrinally. It is an inspiring book that SHOWS us that the "deeper walk" is simply the walk God intended for His children to have in the first place. The chapters on the WILL and avoiding LEGALISM are wonderful in guiding God's children into the wonderful truth in God's Word. Serving and knowing God as H.W.S. indicates is a liberting experience! Please, Baby, Please
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing (01 November, 2002)
Authors: Tonya Lee, Kadir Nelson, and Spike Lee
Average review score:

Again, Please, Mommy, Please?
This book has sweet, rhyming text with an Afican American flavor (Keep off the wall, please, baby, please!). The illustrations are incredibly realistic, and I especially appreciate the endearing expressions on the toddler in this story. Her expressions of delight, stubborn defiance, and wonder are familiar to anyone who has ever loved or parented a one-year old. Best of all, my own children (ages 1 1/2 and 3 1/2) love this story and ask to read it again and again (Please, Mommy, please!). If your own library lacks quality literature featuring ethnically diverse main characters, I highly recommend this one.

Two Year Old Attention Grabber
My two-year old daughter and four year old nephew love this book! There are items to count, colors to name, and of course the wonderful rythym of "please, baby, please." The illustrations are wonderful! The child in the picture could easily be a boy or girl, and the daily routines of the child in the book are similar to any toddler child's busy day. I will share this book for a long time!

My kids love this book!
Rarely does my 2-year old sit through a reading of a whole book. This one he does! And my 3-year old as well. They love chanting "Please, baby, please!" and the other variations of that phrase throughout the book. The story is fun and something that both my kids and I can relate to - an adorable toddler getting into trouble. The combination of excellent writing and beautiful illustrations make this a huge hit with my family!
